Why Small Classes Matter!

A Socratic quote that often guides me to reflection is, “Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.” This expression of sentiment toward the educational process speaks to igniting a passion for learning in students by inviting them into the joy and wonder of the subject matter.

At East Hills Academy, we embody Socrates’ sentiment first and foremost through relationships. Small classes provide ample time and space for teachers to build both personal and academic trust with students. Our sincere devotion to relationships helps secure a foundation of growth for developing learners who thrive when healthy interactions are modeled and upheld.

Another important facet of small class sizes is an increased amount of academic interactions between teachers and students. We kindle the flame of learning by providing specialized attention to each child’s needed areas of both support and extension. Throughout lessons, assessments, and even pivotal growth platforms (such as MAP Growth), teachers will identify areas of low understanding and be able to provide additional methods of mastery. Small class sizes provide an allocation of time for teachers to uniquely approach each student’s learning needs.

Lastly, small class sizes present fewer opportunities for students to become disengaged from learning. Whether instruction is given to the whole group, a small group, or an individual, the teacher is better able to provide redirection as he or she continues to kindle knowledge.

We are honored to provide smaller class sizes at East Hills Academy in the service of our families!
