East Hills’ academic program is guided by the well-respected Core Knowledge Sequence that is used in high-performing charters throughout the country. (A quick clarification: Though close in name, the Core Knowledge Sequence is NOT the Common Core State Standards. They are very different, but often confused because of the names. We are guided by and use the Core Knowledge Sequence, not the standards.) We have chosen the Core Knowledge Sequence because it provides a clear, coherent, and content-rich foundation for every student. This curriculum is built on the idea that “knowledge matters”—the more a child knows, the more they can learn.
By teaching a broad range of topics in history, science, and the arts, we ensure that our students aren’t just learning how to read, but are also gaining the essential background knowledge needed to understand the world around them. This approach prevents the “knowledge gaps” that can happen when subjects are taught in isolation, ensuring that every child enters each new grade with the vocabulary and context they need to succeed.
