Why East Hills Academy Invested in a Bus

In my previous article, I wrote about how both traditional public schools and tuition-free public charter schools have expanded access to educational opportunities previously unavailable to many families. While that was a major step in the right direction, school choice remains unattainable for some families because one of the biggest barriers is transportation.

It is incredibly rare for a charter school in Colorado Springs to provide free bus transportation due to the costs involved. However, from the beginning, a bus was a nonnegotiable part of our vision.

In our effort to be a school that works for working families, we put our money where our mouth is. We have invested in a brand-new bus and contracted with a professional bus operating company. We will also have a bus monitor, an additional trusted adult on the bus alongside the driver, to help ensure a safe environment and maintain high standards of student behavior.

Practically speaking, a school bus saves families valuable time every week. For working parents, single parents, and families with young children at home, every minute counts. Building a school that works for working families is not easy; if it were, there would be many more schools doing it.

When I entered kindergarten during the very first year charter schools were an option in Colorado Springs, my family gained access to an educational opportunity that otherwise would not have been available to us. At East Hills Academy, we are building on that legacy through free bus transportation, a family-friendly schedule and calendar, and affordable preschool and before- and after-school care.

Below, please find the bus route for the 2026-2027 school year.
